 To get a Provisional Driving Licence (Learners licence) for a car, you will need to …

1)      Be 17 years old, and a resident of GB. Click here  for more information.

2)      You must not have any health problems that could make it dangerous for you to drive, unless you have a letter from your doctor advising the DVLA (licence issuers) that this is under control and should not pose a problem.

3)      Any physical disabilities (also notifiable to DVLA) may require modifications to any car that you may drive.                                                                          

4)      Your eyesight must be to a specific required standard. This should be with the aid of glasses or contact lenses if these are required.                                                              

5)       You must not currently be prevented from driving for any reason.

Special educational needs and learning difficulties such as Dyslexia need not be a problem, even when sitting the theory test.

If you satisfy the above, then you’re set to go. If you have a current, valid UK passport or another form of identity and can provide addresses of where you have lived for the past three years, then you can apply online  here. To apply by post you will need to complete the D1 application form that is available from the DVLA form-ordering service or Post Office branches. You will also need to enclose original documentation confirming your identity, apassport style colour photograph and the fee of £45.00. Send your completed application and payment to DVLA,Swansea, SA99 1AD or you may be able to use the premium checking service at Post Office branches.
